Brussels - Eating Fries and Teaching Hindi to a French Guy!

Updated: May 23, 2023

This incidence was funny and awkward at the same time. So I was waiting in a queue to get the Belgian frites from the most famous place in Brussels along with a mother-daughter duo from UK. I met them during our afternoon walking tour of the European part of Brussels. That’s not the awkward part. So I had a great time talking to them about Europe. They were basically from Columbia and were in Paris for the Christmas. It was the last day for them as well in Brussels and was travelling back to London later in the night.

We talked about our experiences of travelling in Europe and things we did till that day. I shared my views about how different people are in Paris compared to Amsterdam. I personally found Dutch people friendlier than French people. As usual I was a bit loud while sharing my thoughts on French people with these ladies. What I didn’t realize is that there was a group of French people right behind us in the queue. One guy from that group started talking to the daughter and after a while all of us got into a discussion.

We started talking about which country everyone from and when these guys said that they are from France, I was stunned. 3 of us burst out laughing and French guys were clueless. I had to explain them that I was talking about how French people were difficult to deal with them and it was really awkward moment for me. But then the guy started asking me about India and we talked about languages and he was interested in learning Hindi. I taught him a statement in Hindi and that’s how we pass the waiting time.

I ordered the large frites with barbeque sauce and it was indeed delicious. While talking I got surprised when the daughter said that the lady is her stepmother and I suddenly had immense respect for both of them. Inspite being the stepmother daughter duo, I could see that both of them were quite close to each other and kind enough at the same time. They were roaming around the city together and her husband and son were resting at hotel. I felt fortunate to meet them.

We had a great time eating frites and then we headed back to the park we ended the walking tour at. I bid goodbye to them at the metro station and they were kind enough to get me the metro ticket back to my hostel near Rogier metro station. I always feel happy when I meet such incredible people who are kind and helpful.
