Istanbul - Exploring the city Turkish way

Updated: May 23, 2023

Admire Istanbul's uniqueness compared to other European cities

Istanbul city is known for its unique mosques that you won't see anywhere in the world in terms of their architecture compared to rest of European cities. Every mosque follows a theme how it is designed and constructed. There is a heavy influence of domes shaped towers along with ancient symbols and scripts written on the outer walls of these mosques. Usually, they are also surrounded by huge lawns and sitting area right next to their entrance.

Take a stroll through the shopping alley leading to mosque square

The pathway to mosque square goes through a shopping alley full of local Turkish handmade carpets and cloths on either side of it. All the shops have a Turkish flag hanging on their rooftops. It's a perfect location for aspiring photographers to bring out their artist within. Usually this pathway is densely crowded by locals and travellers. We could see lots of western tourists buying Turkish carpets for their return trips.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a nice pic taken in my camera of this alley!

Visit the Mosque Square

Once you reach the mosque square, you would witness how massive it is. In the centre of the square, there is a huge lawn with lots of different varieties of flowers and designer fountains in between. There are zigzag trails for visitors to walk around. Flock of Pigeons are usually fed by the locals sitting on the benches, tourists taking selfies with their loved ones, local vendors selling Turkish hot delicacies, children running around. Definitely a sight to watch out! You end up spending the whole afternoon at the square since it takes a while to cover entire area and visit all the monuments around. You can purchase the combo tickets for mosque square attractions to save some money.

Try the Turkish delicacy, 'Turkish Cinnamon Salep'

I can’t tell you how much you would like it. I end up having it thrice after trying for the first time. I never had something like it before. The recipe is quite basic, but its super delicious. It is made of Turkish hot milk with sugar and cinnamon added on top. It is thick in texture and provides much needed warmness to your body in chilly weather. One can’t get enough of it; simply delicious.

Get the best view of Istanbul from the top of Galata Tower

Galata Tower is situated on the other side of the Bosphorus river that divides Istanbul city in middle with locals living on either sides of it. Both sides are connected by local trams and a walking bridge; ‘Galata bridge’. The tower offers the best possible 360 view of Istanbul city. You can see the picturesque skyline across all sides of the tower. It's quite popular amongst locals and tourists, especially romantic couples! It's magical, just look at the view below.

Walk over the Galata Bridge while coming back to main city

While walking on the bridge you will notice below River cruises giving ride to tourists. Local vendor shops also line-up below the bridge. Fishermen have their fishing traps hanging from the bridge into the river; they chit-chat with each other while waiting for their prey. Usually, it’s a great site during the day to witness fishermen in action; not so much in the night. On the other side of the bridge, plenty of small food joints sell local food right next to waterfront.

Do lots of shopping at Grand Bazaar

You should plan visiting the Grand Bazaar as early during the day as possible as there is a lot to explore and shop around. Vendors sell multiple varieties of items including Turkish spices, fruits, garments, cloths, utensils, lanterns, etc. It is basically a traditional version of modern shopping malls that has preserved its old heritage. Everywhere you would see Turkish flags hanging from rooftops of stalls on either sides of the alleys. Entire Bazaar area has a well-constructed rooftop and entrance doors from all sides.

Bazaar closes around 6pm in evening, where the entrance door is shut at 6 while shops inside still open for another 30 min. Electronic items are usually the cheapest. Like ancient mosques, the Grand bazaar represents the traditional side of Istanbul that has preserved its old cultural heritage. Istanbul city feels like a perfect blend of a modern European culture and ancient Turkish cultural inheritance.

Try the Famous Turkish Tea

Just try the local version of Tea which you can easily get at most of the street stalls or cafes. I am a big tea lover myself but I am sure even a non-drinker would also find it amazing.
